GORHAM — Michael Steven Riley, 66, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018.

He was born in Portland, on Nov. 3, 1951, the son of Edna Louise (Merrifield) and Martin T. Riley III.

Michael was a 1970 graduate of Westbrook High School. He then made a career for himself working as an antique dealer. Michael had a love for vintage automobiles and Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Over his lifetime, he owned over 13 Harley-Davidsons and an Indian. Michael took first place on multiple occasions at the Bonny Eagle Car Show with his 1955 Chevy Bel Air that he fully restored.

Always a wheeler and dealer, he was a great salesman who was said to be able to sell a blind man a pair of glasses, an ice cube to an Eskimo. Michael was an honest, hardworking and loyal individual who loved and cared for his family. He enjoyed finding treasures at local auctions, yard sales and estate sales. He loved the outdoors: snowmobiling, hunting, and fishing.

He is survived by his son, Steven Riley; his significant other, Patricia Cobb of Gorham; sisters, Lorraine Riley of Hollis and Francine Edwards of Naples; brother, Chet Merrifield III of Steep Falls; two nephews and many grandchildren, extended family and friends.

Emery Cambridge Daly

MANCHESTER, CONN. — Emery Cambridge Daly, 84, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018 at Manchester Memorial Hospital in Manchester, Conn. surrounded by members of his family.

Emery was born on Jan. 30, 1933 in Lynnfield Center, Mass., the son of Raymond Christy and Dorothea Shay Daly, and had a wonderfully interesting and varied life.

Emery grew up in Hudson, N.H., with his mother and stepfather Allen Frederick Crabtree Jr., and graduated from Nashua High School in 1950 as the last class from Hudson before the town’s students began going to their new Alvirne High School.

He had a lifelong curiosity about how things worked, and devoted intense attention to detail on every task that he undertook. Those traits inspired his academic and work careers. After graduating in 1953 from Maine Maritime Academy in Castine with a bachelor’s degree in Marine Science, Emery served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War on the USS Boxer as a marine engineer. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, he worked as a marine engineer for several years on United Fruit merchant ships in the Caribbean. He returned to school at the University of New Hampshire and received his Mechanical Engineering degree in 1961. That led to a long and successful 30-year career as an experimental engineer working on jet engine development with Pratt and Whitney in East Harford, Conn. In all his life’s dealings, he was truly “an officer and a gentleman!”

Retirement didn’t slow Emery down, it just changed his focus. Following in the footsteps of his stepfather, he was Master of Charter Oak Lodge #58 in Effingham, N.H., of the Free and Accepted Order of Masons. Emery served on the East Hartford Board of Education, following the example set by his mother, who was chairwoman of the Hudson (N.H.) School Board. Emery was active in Contract Bridge tournaments in the region and gained the honored status of Life Master.

He had a lifelong interest in genealogy, and continued and expanded the comprehensive family history that his mother had started. He created the Dalyclan.org website with detailed, well-documented listings of hundreds of Daly, Crabtree and other family ancestors reaching back hundreds of years. It is a valuable, well-used research tool by researchers around the world. He and his brother, Allen Crabtree III, used the Dalyclan.org website as the basis for books they have collaborated on including Uncle Charlie’s Tape Worm (published 2016) and Peggy Marsh, Chorus Girl and Gold Digger (in progress). Emery has also published several e-books with his cousin in the Philippines, and A Widow’s Third.

Emery married the first time to Nancy Taylor in Effingham, N.H. in 1961 and had two sons, Stephen and Paul Daly. He then married Roberta Maselek in Tolland, Conn. in 2001 and became an instant father of four children, Kristen, Brendon, Justin and Tyler. He has been a devoted father to all his children, and they remember fondly how he always had time to listen and help them, no matter what problem they brought to him.

Emery is greatly missed by Roberta, his wife of 17 years, his daughter and five sons, two brothers, and five grandchildren. His son Paul Daly, wife Shannon, and grandchildren McKenna and Jameson live in Colorado. Son Stephen Daly lives in Massachusetts. Stepdaughter Kristen lives in Massachusetts. Stepson Brendon Maselek and his wife Corey, stepson Justin Maselek and grandchildren Arianna, Jackson, and Greyson, and stepson Tyler Maselek all live in Connecticut. Emery leaves two brothers, Allen Frederick Crabtree III in Sebago, and Howard Christy Daly in New York.

He is predeceased by his father, Raymond Christy Daly and his mother, Dorothea Shay Daly Crabtree, as well as his stepfather Allen Frederick Crabtree Jr. Emery leaves behind two devoted pets, his dog Emmie and his cat Marmalade — they miss him greatly and don’t understand why he hasn’t come home.

Visiting hours were held at Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottvile Road (Route 83) in Vernon, Conn. on Jan. 17, 2018 from 5 to 8 p.m. The family greeted friends and relatives then. A private burial will be held on Jan. 18, 2018 at the Forest Hill Avenue Cemetery in Lynnfield Center, Mass.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations may be made to the National Stroke Association, in remembrance of Emery Daly, at 9707 East Easter Lane, Suite B, Centerville, CO 80112.

Carol A. Raymond

NORWAY — Carol Ann Hall Raymond, also known as “Buddy,” 81, of Norway, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2018, at her home with her family by her side following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

She was born in Lewiston on May 8, 1936, the daughter of G. Freeman and Virginia Holden Hall. She graduated from Norway High School in the class of 1954, and then she attended Westbrook Jr. College studying x-ray technology. She married W. Bradford Raymond on March 4, 1956. He died on June 9, 2005.

She had been a mother and homemaker all of her life. She was a member of the Second Congregational Church and served on the Stephens Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for many years. Carol Ann brought love and laughter into the lives of all who knew her. “Buddy” was a sun worshipper, whether she was at her second home in New Smyrna Beach, where she spent the last 30 winters — she enjoyed the beach, all her wonderful friends and loads of good times, or her beloved cottage on Lake Pennesseewassee. She often said “she lived her life on everyone else’s vacations.”

Her door was always open, with a smile on her face or a listening ear. Mom was a best friend to many, she knew everyone’s secrets, but would never tell. She was a trusted soul. Mom was a joker and always saw the funny side of life. She had an amazing sense of humor and loved to make people laugh. She loved to “rig up,” a trait she passed on to her children, grandchildren and even her great grandchildren. Her rig box was special and much loved by all. Clowns were a special totem and with her always. She was a people person with a huge heart, her friends were truly extended family. She was another mother to so many.

Carol Ann was well-traveled and visited most of America. She was an avid sports fan, following the Patriots and Red Sox games, always rooting for her team. She loved harness racing and “betting on the ponies.” She was a lover of animals, especially her beloved kitty “Missymoo.” Mom loved music and dancing, which she enjoyed in her later years with her special companion Jack Glover. Carol Ann was a great cook and when people dropped by, one of her mottos was “throw another potato on and share the wealth.”

Her greatest loves were her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was our matriarch, our friend and “Our Rock.” We will all miss her!

Carol Ann is survived by her daughters, Aubrey Sue Raymond and her significant other Anthony Criscitelli of Mechanic Falls, and Stacey Ann Raymond of Norway; her son, Jeffrey Hall Raymond of Harrison; five grandchildren, Tyler Bradford Raymond and his wife Katie (Lobb) of Gray, Coralee Rae Foster of South Portland, Devon Freeman Richards and his companion Suzy Lopatin of Portland, Danielle Lynn Richards and her significant other Jamie Palmer of Oxford, and Jeffrey Foster and his wife Toni of Shrewsbury, Mass.; great-grandchildren, Isaac William Young, Emma Louise Palmer and Ethan Roy Palmer, all of Oxford, Chase Owen Raymond and Maggie Evelyn Raymond, both of Gray; a special friend and companion Jack Glover.

Family and friends attended a time of visitation on Saturday, Jan. 27, at Oxford Hills Funeral Services, 1037 Main St., Oxford. At Carol Ann’s request there will be a celebration of life in the spring following her burial, time and date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Beacon Hospice, 245 Center St., Suite 10A, Auburn, ME 04210, or to the Cancer Resource Center of Western Maine, PO Box 263, Norway, ME 04268. Herman Heald Jr.

FRYEBURG — Herman Charles Heald Jr. went to heaven peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018 while at the Hospice House in Auburn, Maine. He turned 94 in December.

He was the eldest of six siblings born to Marion and Herman C. Heald Sr. on Dec. 7, 1923 in North Chatham, N.H.

He proudly served his country in the Army from 1944 to 1946, leaving with an Honorable Discharge and a Purple Heart.

After only knowing his wife, Dorothy Danforth Drew, for only 57 days, they were married on Sept. 29, 1945 (while he was on leave) and would have celebrated their 50th anniversary on Sept. 29, 1995 had she not passed in February of that year.

After he was out of the Army, they moved to Fryeburg and made their home in that little town and raised their two daughters.

He worked for Osgood’s Springmont Farms in Fryeburg, delivering milk door-to-door in the area and often putting their orders in their refrigerators. Later, he went to work for Oakhurst Dairy, at first doing the same delivery and his wife, Dot, would ride shotgun with him and help with the door-to-door deliveries. He went on to drive the bulk truck to the Oakhurst Dairy Plant in Portland to load up and bring milk back to his home, where the delivery drivers would load their local trucks and do their deliveries,

He and his wife later moved to Bridgton as the plant had built a large cooler there and it would be closer for him. Retiring after 28 years with Oakhurst, he worked for a small lumber mill in Bridgton for a short time.

He was an active member of the Mt. Etna Grange in Baldwin for several years, the Paugus Grange in Fryeburg and also the VFW in Lovell.

He was predeceased by his loving wife; his parents; his three younger brothers, Merle, Philip and Fred; and his only sister, Mary Heald Benson.

He is survived by his two loving daughters, Betty Ann Sargent and friend Frank of Rumford and Marion and husband “Buzz” Brine of Fryeburg (with whom he has resided for the past 17 years before his death).

Others include his only surviving sibling out of six, his youngest brother, Russell, who resides in Santa Rosa, Calif. His only granddaughter, Marcie and her husband Bob Bean of Casco; his two grandsons, Tony Sargent of Bridgton and Michael Sargent of Naples. He has five great grandchildren, Cody and Kyle Bean of Casco, Brandon and Brianna Sargent of Naples and Beneka Lawrence of Raymond. Three great-great grandchildren Emma, Aiden and Isaiah Lawrence of Raymond. Also, several nieces, nephews and friends he has made over the years, some calling him “Grampa Jun.”

The family would like to send a huge thank you to Androscoggin Hospice and Home Care for the exceptional care they gave to our very special Dad while he was at home and then at the Hospice House and to us during his stay.

As per his request, there will be no service and only a private family burial in the spring.

Arrangements are with Poitras, Neal & York Funeral Home, Cornish, www.mainefuneral.com

Anyone wishing to make donations in his memory may do so to: The Hospice House in Auburn, Fryeburg Rescue or Fryeburg Fire Department in Fryeburg.
